Music keyboard on iPhone – some keys are unresponsive

Sadly, this is an Apple bug that has been around since iOS 7 arrived, and is still not fixed. I’m afraid we can’t do anything about it, although you may find that turning your phone 180 degrees may help.

Here are some more details:

iOS 7 and 8 have a strange feature that interferes with touches on the bottom left corner of the iPhone screen. That means the left three white keys in the on-screen keyboard don’t work properly. To successfully play those keys, you have to move your finger slightly when you touch the key. Apple have not yet responded to a number of developer complaints, nor to our bug reports.

Sometimes my selection fails with a strange sound.

Welcome to 1980. See the info/settings screen for solutions.

Player vs. Pro

Is MIDI input included in the basic Player App?

Yes, live MIDI input is included. You don’t need the Pro upgrade to be able to use the Fairlight App as a MIDI-controlled sample module, playing genuine Fairlight voices. This works for any Core MIDI compatible devices, including MIDI over Bluetooth Low Energy (MIDI BLE).

Just to be clear, you can use a MIDI keyboard to play CMI voices in the $9.99 basic Fairlight Player App.

The Fairlight Apps do not yet have any live MIDI-out capability.

With the Pro upgrade, you gain the ability to import and export MIDI files.

Should I buy The Fairlight App or Fairlight Pro?

If you know that you want the Pro features, you can buy the Fairlight Pro App INSTEAD OF the Fairlight App. The Fairlight Pro App behaves just like the Fairlight app with the Pro upgrade, but has the word “Pro” on its icon. The cost of the Fairlight Pro App is the same as the Fairlight App plus the in-App Pro upgrade.

If you are not sure whether you want the Pro features, you can buy the Fairlight App and upgrade later. This was your only option if you bought version 1.0. The only disadvantage of this approach is that your App will not show “Pro” on its icon even after you upgraded to the Pro features.

Although it is possible to buy BOTH Apps, there is no benefit in doing that– unless you want to show off to your friends that you have two Fairlight Apps, or you want two independent workspaces (each App has its own database and files). Or maybe you are having so much fun with your Fairlight App that you want to pay us twice!

How do I get the Pro version of the App?

In version 1.0.1 and later, there are two versions of the Fairlight App: the upgradeable Fairlight App and the pre-upgraded Fairlight Pro App.

The Fairlight (non-Pro) App can be upgraded to the Pro features. You can tap the upgrade button on many pages. This will allow you to use your iTunes account for an in-App purchase of the Pro upgrade.

If you know that you want the Pro features, you can buy the Fairlight Pro App INSTEAD OF the non-Pro Fairlight App. The Fairlight Pro App behaves just like the Fairlight App with the Pro upgrade, but has the word “Pro” on its icon. The cost of the Pro App is the same as the non-Pro App plus the in-App Pro upgrade.

If you are not sure whether you want the Pro features, you can buy the Fairlight App and upgrade later. The only disadvantage of this approach is that your App will not show “Pro” on its icon even after you upgraded to the Pro features.

Does the Pro upgrade work on all my iOS devices?

Yes, your Pro upgrade is valid for all of your devices. As long as your device is logged in to your iTunes account, and you have already paid for the upgrade, you will not be charged for an in-App upgrade on that device.

The “Check for Upgrades” button in the App’s upgrade screen will check your upgrade status with your iTunes account and will performa an in-App upgrade on that device without charge. But even if you tapped the in-App ‘upgrade’ button, you would not be charged a second time.

This applies to all your devices: for new devices as well as devices where you have deleted the App, you will only ever have to pay for one upgrade as long as you use the in-App upgrade button and you are logged in to the same iTunes account.

NOTE: the upgrade process will only work if your device is connected to the internet. You can test this by loading any web page in Safari.

Can’t upgrade to pro: “In-app purchases are not allowed.”

Do you perhaps have the in-app purchases restricted? When you have restricted in-app purchases the error message “In-app purchases are not allowed” pops up.

To disable this restriction, tap on the Settings icon of your device (not the Fairlight App) -> General -> Restrictions.

This section will prompt for you to enter a passcode or create one if you already haven’t. Once you have entered your passcode, scroll down to “Allowed Content.”

Next to In-App Purchases, if the button says ON, it means in-app purchases are allowed. If it’s off it means it’s restricted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my device work with Audiobus?

The CMI App will work on any device running iOS 7 or later, and will work with Audiobus with the same restriction. However, if you want to use Audiobus or do heavy performance and composing work, we recommend a minimum of iPod Touch 4G, iPhone 5 or iPad 3. You can use earlier devices, but the composing will be slower and the Audiobus latency will be longer.

How do I access all 560 CMI IIX voices?

In the top right of Page 2, in the Voices column, is a button “All Voices.” Tap that and you can see all the CMI IIX floppy disks and all their voices. Selecting a voice lets you play it with the on-screen keyboard or from a MIDI keyboard.

My Line 6 Midi Mobilizer doesn’t work

Unfortunately, Apple’s requirement of 64-bit compatibility from February 2015 onwards means devices without 64-bit drivers, like the MIDI Mobilizer and the Akai SynthStation, don’t work directly with the CMI App. However, you can use another app such as MidiBridge to convert MIDI Mobilizer to Core MIDI, which the CMI app can use.

A pop sounds when the App starts playing

Have a look in your device’s Settings > iPod > Sound Check. This may be suddenly changing the volume when you start playing. Turn it off for working with the Fairlight App, but don’t forget to turn to back on again to protect your ears from loud music.

Does the Fairlight App work with AirPlay?

Whoops. On iOS 8 the answer seems to be no. We’re working on it.

The short answer is: yes, but…

If you have selected an AirPlay destination in any other App (e.g. iPod or Movies), that audio destination applies to all Apps, including Fairlight. If the AirPlay destination has become unavailable (e.g. being used by some other device), not only will the Fairlight App audio not be heard anywhere, but it may stop altogether until you select an available destination, such as the device itself.

Airplay also has a long delay (can be many seconds) between the audio being transmitted and being played on the destination. This may be confusing, with audio feedback and Page R audio sounding seconds after the action or pattern is displayed.

Finally, it seems that the “old” Airport Express (firmware version 6.3) does not work as an AirPlay destination for iOS devices, despite being available for selection. The Fairlight App will stop while it is selected.

How much does the App cost?

The price for the basic App in the USA is $9.99. The in-app upgrade to the Pro version (see the feature comparison) is $39.99. The prices in other countries are somewhat comparable, but in all cases the Pro upgrade costs around four times the initial App price.

What MIDI devices are supported?

The basic Fairlight App supports Core MIDI, so it can receive MIDI events via WiFi or (for the iPad) many MIDI USB devices via the Apple Camera Connection Kit. See the Live MIDI Help for details.

Any device that sends Core MIDI via MIDI Bluetooth Low Energy (MIDI BLE) will also work.

Some devices that we have tested with the Camera Connection Kit, and we know work, are:

  • AKAI LPK25 keyboard
  • ESI Midimate II
  • M-Audio Oxygen 8
  • Cakewalk UM-1G

Note that due to WiFi latency on a busy network, we recommended that for real-time performance or recording you should use a dedicated WiFi network with just your iOS device(s) and the Mac.

The floppy disk noise is too loud.

Yes, it is. In our recording studio, we had to build a separate soundproof area to isolate the CMI from the performers. But, fortunately for you, in the App you can adjust the floppy disk volume in the info/settings screen.

When will [my favourite feature] be available?

If the Fairlight App is missing something you would like, please let us know via the feedback form. We have a list, but your input will help us prioritise it.

Bugs Fixed in 1.5 to 1.6

iOS 6 – First visit to Page R quits App

This was an iOS 6 incompatibility problem, and is fixed in version 1.1.11.

App crashes when editing instrument in Page 3

In release 1.1.11, when you tap the edit button on an instrument voice in Page 3, the App quits. This applies to the Pro and non-Pro Apps, but apparently not to the non-Pro App if it has been upgraded to Pro.
This bug is fixed in release 1.1.12, which we hope will be approved by mid-January.

Sampler Page crashes in version 1.1.12

Sorry about that. A bug crept in during final updates. This is fixed in version 1.1.13, which is now submitted to the App Store for approval.

Metronome is missing

Whoops. Version 1.5 had so many changes, we missed this one. It will be fixed in 1.5.1.

Crash when importing voices

It seems there are some audio files our code can’t handle, and instead of saying so, we just quit the App. Sorry about that– it is already fixed for 1.5.1. The workaround is not to select the offending files in the voice import page, preferably by removing them from your device using iTunes.

Silent Page R

Some people are reporting that the only way to get their new songs to play back is to use the “pattern repeat” mode. We are investigating. In the meantime, your workaround is to go back to Page 2 them open Page R again.

Deleted or changed notes still play unchanged

When you delete a note in Page R, or change its pitch, it still plays unchanged. Whoops!

There are three possible workarounds:

– play in pattern repeat mode (the green arrow in the button)

– go to page 2, select a different song, go to Page R, back to Page 2, select your song again, then Page R. That will clear and reload all the notes.

– use the clear command to clear the track then replace the notes you want.

This bug is fixed in release 1.5.2.

New notes don’t play in iOS 5 devices

In iOS 5 devices, new notes are recorded with a volume of 9, which is greater than the maximum CMI volume of 8. In iOS 6 these notes play at 8, but in iOS 5 devices they are rejected by Core Audio.

There are two possible workarounds:

– edit every new note;

– use an external music keyboard to record notes.

This bug is fixed in release 1.5.3.

iPad top panel goes black

This is a very rare and hard to catch bug. If it happens to you, we’d really like to hear about it. Please tell us your iOS version, your iPad version, what you were doing when it happened, and what other Apps were running at the time.

We believe that this is caused by running out of memory. If you don’t mind helping us track down the problem, or you just want to fix it right now, please do the following:

– Tap your home button. Then double-tap it.
– Hold an App in the bottom row, tap the (-) button for all those Apps you think might use a lot of memory, especially 3D games and heavy-duty audio processing Apps.
– Launch the CMI App again, and see if that removes or reduces the problem.
– If you feel like being a detective, launch your other apps one by one and see which one causes or worsens the problem– and let us know!

Addendum: We believe that we have fixed this in release 1.6. Please tell us if it still happens!

iOS 7 Audio Bugs

Sadly, the release version of iOS 7 has some new audio bugs that were not in the beta versions. This has broken the CMI Apps in iOS 7. The Audiobus guys are saying that serious musicians should NOT upgrade to iOS 7 yet because it has too many audio bugs.

The symptoms in release 1.5.4 and earlier are that most of the voices are silent, and there is an error trying to connect to Audiobus.

CMI release 1.5.5 has fixes for these bugs, and is in the App Store waiting for approval.

In the meantime, enjoy the “LOCUST” sample song– it just happens to have voices that all work in iOS 7.

Crash on iOS 5

Unfortunately, the extensive changes needed for iOS 7 compatibility caused a problem with iOS 5, where the App crashes when you select pages. This has been fixed in Pro version 1.5.6 and non-Pro version 1.5.7.

Page 3 Crash in 1.5.7 and 1.5.8

Sorry, in our rush to fix the iOS 5 crash we deployed a version that wasn’t ready. It crashes when you select Page 3. Instruments work but cannot be edited. We have already submitted a new version that fixes the problem. It should be approved by about the 18th.

Stuck keys in on-screen keyboard

Releases from 1.5.6 to 1.5.9 have a bug where keys sometimes get stuck in the on-screen keyboard. You have to quit the App to clear the keys.
This is already fixed for the next release. In the meantime, the workaround is to tap the octave selector rather tan drag it, so that the C key is always to the left.

Green screen in sampler page on iPad

Yet another unexpected consequence of the changes we made for iOS 7 compatibility. Unfortunately, this makes the sampler unusable and there is no workaround. It is fixed in 1.5.10, which should be available by the end of October.

Crash when deleting a pattern

When you delete a pattern in the patterns screen by sliding sideways, then return to Page R, the app crashes. This will be fixed in 1.5.12, but in the meantime avoid deleting patterns. You can re-use patterns by using the clear button to clear all tracks in the pattern.

Bugs fixed in 1.1.8 to 1.1.11

Stuck notes with Alesis IO Dock MIDI

Some customers are reporting stuck notes and missed notes when using an external MIDI keyboard through the Alesis IO Dock. Now that we have an IO Dock for testing, we also see this problem, not just in the Fairlight App but in other MIDI Apps as well. It seems that this is both an IO Dock problem and a problem with the Fairlight App.

Note that the problem is very bad in IO Dock firmware version 1.0, somewhat improved in 1.05 and (if you have Fairlight App 1.1.9) fixed in 1.07. You can find the latest Alesis firmware at http://www.alesis.com/iodock under Docs and Downloads.

In Fairlight App version 1.1.8 the problem will still occur occasionally, but is completely fixed in 1.1.9 with the latest IO Dock firmware.

iOS 5 – Akai SynthStation not working

Unfortunately, the Synthstation API software is incompatible with iOS 5. Akai have just released a new version compatible with iOS 5, but too late to be included in Fairlight App 1.1.7. It is fixed in 1.1.8, which was submitted to the App Store on 13th of November 2011.

iOS 5 – App quits when instrument first selected

If you launch the App and then select an instrument, it will quit.
The workaround is to select a song first, then select an instrument.

Imported songs don’t play

When imported, a song displays all the notes, but plays silently.

This bug is fixed for release 1.5.11, coming soon.

Audiobus doesn’t work

Unfortunately, we misconfigured Audiobus in the 1.6 release of the non-Pro version of the CMI App when submitting it to the App Store. This is fixed in 1.6.1, which should be released in the last week of September.

My App quits as soon as it launches

This can happen if you have Apps in the background using all the memory. 3D games are particularly memory-hungry. Try quitting other Apps:

(before iOS 7) Tap home, double-tap home, tap and hold an App in the bottom row, tap the (-) button for those you want to quit.

(iOS 7) Double-tap home then slide the App upwards to quit it.

If that doesn’t work, please send your crash logs, looking for files that start with Vogel CMI_:

http://www.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/retrieving-crash-reports-on-ios

Happily, this problem happens much less often on newer devices and on iOS 6 and 7.

Bugs fixed in 1.1.6 and 1.1.7

iOS 5 – iPad crashes

Sorry, this didn’t happen in the iOS 5 betas. We are investigating and will release a fix ASAP. In the meantime, if you have an iPad, you might want to consider not upgrading to iOS 5 yet…

iOS 5 – voice preview does not play

Sorry, this didn’t happen in the iOS 5 betas. We are investigating and will release a fix ASAP.

Page R repeats one pattern

When you select a pattern (not a step) in the pattern/step selection screen, Page R goes into pattern-repeat mode as expected. However, tapping the repeat mode button to continue playing does not work.

The workaround for now is to keep tapping the repeat mode button to cycle through pattern repeat mode again. Page R will now proceed to the next step.

IMPORTANT: 1.1.6 crashes on iOS 4.x

Unfortunately, a last-minute bug addition got past our testing process, and so version 1.1.6 crashes in any version of iOS before 5.0.

This is fixed in version 1.1.7, which should be out in a week or so, but in the meantime there are two possible solutions to this problem if you are running iOS 4.x:

  • Don’t update to 1.1.6. Wait for 1.1.7 to be released
  • Update to iOS 5. Apple are strongly encouraging all customers to update to iOS 5.

Bugs fixed in 1.1.5

IMPORTANT: export your sampled voices

Version 1.1, in some circumstances, can lose track of the audio data for sampled voices. A workaround for this: after you have set the trim and loop points for a voice you just sampled, export it (button on bottom right of the voice page). Then re-import it in Page 2. After checking that the imported voice is as you expect it, delete the original voice in Page 2.
If you already have a sampled voice with misplaced data (unfortunately the symptom of this is a crash when you try to view it), please use the support form and we will help you fix it.

There is one other case in 1.1.1 that can be worse: if you cancel from the sampler page after sampling a voice, all of your voice data will be deleted and cannot be recovered. So please don’t cancel if you have tapped the record button, and always export your voices.

Other bugs in 1.1

  • Page 2 new song does not display the new song
  • Oscilloscope / waterfall breaks up on loud sounds
  • Page 3 instrument voice adjustments sometimes slow
  • Voice waveform display is incorrect at low amplitude in the Retina display

Crash when selecting a sampled voice

If you have a sampled voice with misplaced audio data (see the FAQ about exporting sampled voices), it will crash when you try to view it. Either delete the voice (losing the sample), or if you want to recover it, please use the support form and we will help you fix it.

I have some bug that comes and goes

It seems that for 0.1% of customers, the song database gets corrupted for some reason. If you have some problem, please try the following remedies, only going as far as is necessary to fix the problem:

– quit and restart your App (tap home, double-tap home, tap and hold Fairlight in the bottom row, tap the (-) button)

– export your song, then delete it, then re-import it from the export file

– export all your songs, instruments and voices, copy the export files from iTunes to somewhere safe, then delete the app from your device and reinstall from iTunes, then re-import your files.

If all that fails, please submit a bug report in the feedback page, and include your crash logs (see instructions here).

Bugs fixed in 1.1

My iPad has no sound

Some customers have reported this problem, and have fixed it like this:

"It was the new OS’s change of the side switch being a landscape lock or mute. Changed it BACK to a mute, changed it to full volume (even though it was working with every other app) and then set it back to landscape lock and it brought the sound back."

Another possible cause is AirPlay. If you have selected AirPlay as a destination in another App (e.g. iPod or Movies), that audio destination applies to all Apps. If the AirPlay destination has become unavailable (e.g. being used by some other device), not only will the Fairlight App audio not be heard anywhere, but it may stop altogether until you select an available destination, such as the device itself.

Bugs fixed in 1.0.1

iPad – Page 2 song selection problems

If you change the song in Page 2, then tap the [Page R] button below the list of songs, your selected song does not load.

Workaround: after selecting a song, use the [Page R] button at the top of the screen.

This is fixed in 1.0.1, which is not yet released.

My iPad shows a black screen at the top sometimes

This intermittent bug has appeared for a couple of customers, and we are tracking down the cause. It seems to be caused by memory contention with other Apps.

If it does happen to you, a workaround is to quit the App: First tap the home button to show the apps, then double-tap the home button. Tap and hold the Fairlight icon in the bottom bar, then tap the red (-) button. Then relaunch the app and it will run.

If it keeps happening, quit other Apps, especially those that use a lot of memory, like 3D games.

We would really appreciate some help in tracking down this elusive bug. If it happens, please use the support form to tell us:

  • What are the exact steps needed to make it happen?
  • If it happened when tapping a navigation button at the top, which button was it? Page 1? Page 2? Page 3? etc…
  • Does it happen often or rarely?
  • Do you have a lot of other apps running? If so try quitting all the apps you don’t need and see if that helps

  1. Frank E says:

    Hello, everybody

Can you tell me how can I delete my New Disk 1 I’ve created and how can I delete the sample, my own first sample 😉 , I’ve imported to my New Disk 1 ?

Tank you very much in advance.

    Frank

    • Thomas says:

Frank, it’s not really obvious, but a standard iOS method: swipe left on the item you want to delete.

      • Frank E says:

Thank you, Thomas but i don’t understand what you tell me. Ok, This is what i did:

        – I imported a .wav file to my ipad via Good Reader.

        – In Fairlight App i clicked on New Disk ( P2 Disk ) and i clicked on “Import Audio File ” and there it was de .wav file in the “New Disk” but every time i clicked on “Import audio file” and go back to “New Disk” i find there it is the .wav repited.

        – I must say when i clicked on “New Disk” in “P2 Disk” it created a “New Disk 1” and happend the same thing i told you before.

        So my question is:

How can i delete all the things i’ve done. I mean, all the same .wav file i’ve added to “New Disk” and “New Disk 1” and How can i delete “New Disk 1 “, please ?

        Another question:

How can i deleted a .vcx exported file i’ve created ?

Thank you very much in advance.

        • Frank E says:

Ok Thomas, forget all this because i’ve done it. “I’ve discovered” what you mean and I’ve just delete all that things. It’s the first time i manage Apple and I don’t know it at all. Thank you. 😉

  2. James H says:

Hi, I can’t seem to get the keyboard to appear on page R on my iPhone 6 plus, shaking works fine on my old iphone 5, but nothing appears on the 6 plus, is there a different way to do it. Thanks

    • Thomas says:

James, it looks like it’s yet another thing that disappeared in iOS 8. Version 2.0.1 will be coming out soon, and it has a button on the Page R toolbar to show the keyboard. No more need to shake! In the meantime, tap with two fingers on the left panel to show the keyboard.

  3. mike kane says:

when I try to use Page 6 to edit a the waveform of an existing sound, I get a message saying that the built-in voice cannot be edited. And there is an “update to pro version” button thai appears. This is confusing as I am using the pro version (as far as I know). Does this sound like a bug? Thanks.

  4. mike kane says:

Are you still planning to add more time signatures to the mix? I still think this is the best music-making app for IOS!

  5. George says:

Does the Pro feature include the Fairlight guitar sound used for the famous 3-chord riff in INXS’s “I Need You Tonight” ?

  6. mike kane says:

    Hello,

I just wanted to let you know that (at least on my iPad 3) the CMI app is not working with IOS 8. It is constantly crashing, particularly when I try to enter the pattern edit page from the song edit page. Thanks,

    Mike

    • Thomas says:

Mike, thanks for reporting this. It looks like our iOS 8 fixes introduced this bug, but only in the non-Pro version 1.6.1. It is now fixed in 1.6.2, which is waiting for Apple’s approval.

  7. Brent says:

Do you know that there is serious problems with using Audiobus and IAA?
Neither of which works for CMI.

    • Thomas says:

Sorry about that. Our non-Pro 1.6 App has an Audiobus configuration problem. A 1.6.1 fix is already awaiting Apple’s approval. The Pro App (the one that says “CMI Pro 1.6” on Page 1) does not have this problem.

  8. Matt Hooper says:

Is there any news on page R external midi clock sync in sight ?

  9. mike kane says:

I was wondering whether there was a way to get a clock out (cv) to a modular synth set up from an iPad running the CMI app. Thanks!

  10. mike kane says:

I’m still enjoying the app. However, I’d like to request, once again, that you add 2/4 and 3/4 as alternate time signatures. This would create a world of compositional possibilities. Thanks!

    • Thomas says:

Mike, we hear you. Multiple time signatures is at the top of our list, and we hope to have it out in time for the public release of iOS 8. No promises!
The good news is that you can already do 2/4, if you just think differently about the meaning of the note symbols.

      • mike kane says:

Thanks Thomas. That’s true; unfortunately, what you can’t do is switch from groups of three to groups of two, which is the only way you can create odd time signatures (as you obviously know). In any case, I wasn’t complaining. I think the app provides a lot for $50. I’m just being selfish…

  11. Ron Evans says:

    Love the app!

    1. How do you change the name of songs and instruments?

    2. I can’t get the app to run in sync with GarageBand using Audiobus?

    Thanks!

    • Thomas says:

Ron, for instruments you own (not built-in), just tap the edit button. For songs you own, tap the song name button on the top left of Page R, then tap the name of the song.
I’m not sure what you mean about Audiobus. Page R can play into Garage Band via Audiobus, but there is no clock synch between them. You can use the play control in the Audiobus panel.

  12. Ray Smith says:

    Hi Thomas
I am hoping to purchase the pro version to use live. Can the 8 stored sounds be key mapped across a keyboard or do they have to be layered
    regards Ray

    • Thomas says:

Ray, the original CMI II had eight channel cards, each of which had to be loaded from floppy disk, so it was never possible to play more than 8 voices in the same composition. As you suggest, layering was used to create the amazing stuff from the 80s and beyond. The CMI App at the moment has the same behaviour.
However, we have plans to add keyboard zones in a future release of the CMI App.
In the meantime, if you turn off floppy disk errors and noises in the settings, and stay in Page 2, you can very quickly swap from one instrument to another, so you can change from one set of 8 voices to another.

  13. Andrei says:

I apologies if I read manual not carefully, wondering if I’m able to import real CMI III Songs/Instruments/Voices to iOS app exported by cmios9 application from SCSI image?
    Thanks, Andrei.

    • Thomas says:

Andrei, in a word, yes. If you can get the files onto your iDevice (eg by dragging onto iTunes or opening an email), then .IN, .RS and .VC files can be read by the CMI App.

  14. Lawrence Wilson says:

I am looking at getting the Pro version for my iTouch 5, as it seems to be the closest PVI will ever get to putting out a true Fairlight Series III VSTi. If I use this with a MIDI keyboard setup and DAW, will it work multi-timbrally? And if not, how would I get around that?

    • Thomas says:

Lawrence, release 1.5 introduced polyphonic channel cards, so anything you play via MIDI is polyphonic. Then in release 1.5.2 we added a setting to adjust polyphony so the traditionalists could go back to the way it was if they wanted.
      The short answer is yes.

  15. Rob says:

    Hi

Just download from the APP store
1.5 update And there is No metronome click now ?

I thinks there are few Bugs
    still left.

  16. Mike says:

    Hello Thomas,

The update looks good so far! Thanks so much.

  17. Mike says:

    Hello Thomas,

I’ve been using the Fairlight app for quite a while now and still really enjoy it. The ability to use page R as a “notepad” and then record the results to a DAW, and proceed from there, is fantastic. It’s just a really musical instrument, and the only ipad synth/instrument that I find actually useful. Just one thing: please include the ability to change the time signature of patterns (not just songs). Even if only 2/4, 4/4 and 3/4 were available, endless combinations could produce rhythmically complex songs. Just a suggestions…

    Thanks,

    Mike

    • Thomas says:

Mike, you’re spot on when you talk about pattern time signatures. It was in the original CMI, and it’s high on the list of features we’d like to add in a future release.
At the moment we’re focussed on getting 1.5 released, which has Audiobus support and a number of other improvements.

      • Christan says:

When can we expect to see Audiobus? Very excited for the update! I was also wondering if there was link to the list ( and sounds if possible) featured in the pro version. Thanks for your help.

      • Mike says:

Thanks, Thomas. By the way, audiobus support will be fantastic, and particularly that it will be possible to record Farilight app patterns and then edit them in the Cubasis app. In this case, one can cut up patterns to create any pattern lengths one wants.

  18. Daniel says:

    Hi All,
I run the Pro version on iPad 3 with iOS6.1, and the PAN parameter in the Instruments does not work. I can adjust PAN to L6/R6, which makes the sound appear far left/right, but every other value from L5…0…R5 makes the sound appear in the middle only. It seems that values from 1-5 don’t work. Any idea?

    • Thomas says:

Daniel, the pan values are really all different, but their stereo spread isn’t all that it could be. But pan has been rebuilt with wider spread in release 1.5, which will be out soon.

  19. Brad says:

My samples have clicks and pops. Is this normal for a Fairlight?

    • Thomas says:

Brad, is this while the voice is looping, at the loop point (end of sample)? If so, have a look at the Page S help page about lining up the waveforms in the waterfall display while recording. If not, please give more details.

  20. Thomas says:

Hi folks. We’re making some changes to the App’s sequencer and synthesiser code to allow Audiobus compatibility. It will be a lot easier if we rely on iOS 5 libraries.
So are there any objections to the CMI App requiring iOS 5? Version 1.1.12 already requires iOS 4.3.

  21. Brent says:

Looks like that recording problem could be eisly solved with a new app. Please check out http://www.audiob.us , do you have any plans to make your app compatible with this program?

    • Thomas says:

Yes, we have been on the waiting list to get access to the Audiobus API for quite a while. We’re excited that the App was released today, and hope to get the API soon.

    • Thomas says:

Brent, I’m guessing you contacted Audiobus on our behalf. That encouraged them to give us access to the API. Thanks! We hope to have Audiobus integration within the next month or so. It will not be included in the 1.1.12 bug fix release, due in a week or so.

      • Craig says:

Audiobus support! W00t! I just purchased Audiobus the other day and am delighted at how well it works with the apps that support it. I am eager to start using it with the CMI iOS App. Thanks for working on this.

  22. Simon Carrington says:

    Hi Thomas
Thank you for the reply, yes loving the app! I have already selecting a song in Page R before I select an instrument for Page 3 to EDIT but it still crashes. I am running IOS 6.0.1 on my new iPad. I hope you can fix the bug as I really want to be able to edit the ATTACK / RELEASE etc. Upgrading to pro shortly when I get my iRig Keys! Thanks again for making the Fairlight available to the masses. Wish I could afford the new limited edition set-up. Beautiful!

    • Thomas says:

Simon, this looks like a corrupt database. To fix it, You’ll need to delete the database on your device. But first, export anything you have created (songs, voices, instruments), then quit the app (double-tap home etc) then synch with iTunes. Go to iTunes > your device > Apps > File Sharing > Vogel CMI and delete the file cmiPhone.sqlite. Then launch the app again, test for your bug, and if OK, import your files, then test again.

BTW, please use the reply button…

      • Simon Carrington says:

Thanks Thomas I will let you know how I get on – appreciate the help.

      • Simon Carrington says:

Hi Thomas I have deleted the file and it hasn’t stopped the crashing. I have also reinstalled the app which also hasn’t stopped this. I am ensuring that no other apps are running at the same time just in case that was an issue. I hope you can get to the bottom of this for me as I want to check out the edit features and play more before moving to the pro version. Thanks Simon.

        • Simon Carrington says:

I also forgot to mention that even trying to add an instrument also causes a crash. I cannot add any instruments as soon as you try the click wheel (which is empty) when you tap to turn it crashes out 🙁 Again, any thoughts? Thanks

          • Thomas says:

This is an edit and summary of our conversation on and off list: the non-Pro version has a bug, which Simon documented below. This bug is logged and will be addressed in version 1.1.12. Simon updated to the Pro version, and that fixed the problem.

            EDIT INSTRUMENT CRASH

            1. Launch the app and turn on
            2. Tap Page 2
            3. Tap Default under Instruments
            4. Tap Page 3
            5. Select Instrument SARARR (or any other) in the top selection by tapping 6
            6. Tap Edit then it crashes

            SELECT INSTRUMENT CRASH

            1. Launch the app and turn on
            2. Tape Page 2
            3. Under Instruments tap the + symbol to add an instrument
            4. Tap Import .IN file then you get the page with the click wheel bottom right with nothing
in it, you tap it and it crashes out.

          • Jürgen Schmidt says:

            Hallo Thomas ,

Yes this is The Same Procedere as in The original Report. I have Not trieb my i pad to reset to faktory settings. Should I do it again ? Otter apps to delete does not even say Simon Carington. Ok. I hope you can send me some tips how can I fix it.

            Jürgen

          • Jürgen Schmidt says:

Hello Thomas, What is your impression to the problem lies in me or has the Pro app an error. Still can not edit just what I would have liked? .. Jürgen

          • Thomas says:

It seems this problem also applies to the Pro version. This is fixed in version 1.1.12, which was released in early January.

  23. Simon Carrington says:

Hi there! – I cannot believe I found this app! The Fairlight was my ALL TIME FAVOURITE MOST WANTED instrument and now I can have the sounds and control I so longed for in the 80’s so this is truly brilliant. I am just finding m y way around the app following the help pages and when I am trying to edit a sound in P3, as soon as I tap EDIT the app crashes. Any ideas? Definitely want to upgrade to pro, can you also advise if the app is compatible with iRig Keys? Thanks so much, this app is fantastic!

    • Thomas says:

I’m glad you are enjoying the CMI App. This sounds like a bug that was fixed in the latest version. But if it is the same bug, try selecting a song in Page R before you select an instrument for Page 3.
Yes, the CMI App is compatible with any Core MIDI device, including iRig Keys.

  24. Mario says:

    Hi There,
I am quite interested in purchsing the Fairlight Pro app but would like to know if I plan to use a midi controller through the Line6 Mobilizer II interface, would I be able to use all 88 notes on the keyboard or are there voice range limitations?

    Thanks!
    Mario

    • Thomas says:

Mario, you can indeed use MIDI input to play voices at any valid MIDI pitch. However, just like the original CMI, pitch variation is done by varying the sample playback rate. It will have the correct pitch, but (depending on the nature of the sample) it might sound odd when played back at a very different pitch to its natural (recorded) pitch.

  25. Mike says:

Still enjoying the app. I was just wondering if there was any information available that could help me loop samples more accurately (to reduce the clicking effect) with the app.

I’m also looking forward to the new instruments your company has been working on.

    Thanks,

    Mike

  26. Hans-M. Herrmann says:

    Hi there,

i really like this app very much – you guys did a really good job. I ve got one question: is it possible to record via MIDI instruments into page r in polyphony – as i can play chords in the instruments page. It just doesn’t record it. I ve got the pro Version and an iPhone 3 GS. Thx. Hans

    • Thomas says:

Just like the original CMI II, recording mode is targeted at a single channel. You can import polyphonic content under certain conditions (see the Page R help screen), but there is no polyphonic recording mode. One of the things that stopped us was where to put each note, for example it would look odd if most of the notes went into the first channel, while many went into the second and an occasional note was in the third. It just wouldn’t match the creative process.

  27. Rob says:

I love the Fairlight APP, I would like to know why I cannot send send my voices and Export my voices ?
    I’m on the Pro App
    Thanks
    Rob

    • Thomas says:

Rob, you can do that from the voice detail screen. If it is your voice (that is, you sampled it or imported it from an audio file), you can export it. Have a look at the voices help screen for details.

  28. James says:

The “edit” button is missing to edit Voice: Midi, Semitones,Volume, etc. So changing these values is impossible right now.
    Yes I upgraded to Pro.

The wave form view is very buggy and slow on the iPad 3 Also.

    Thanks.

    • Thomas says:

James, you can only edit the default instrument and instruments that you created yourself. You can use the [+] button to copy an instrument. Have a read of the help screen for Page 3 to get a better understanding of how it works.

      • James says:

I’m Very sorry, I jumped the gun on that one. I just figured that out after checking my other songs with custom instruments. Thanks for the quick reply. Still some minor issues with Page D and iOS 5.1, but I’ll double check and submit any other issues with the Bug Report form. Thanks Again!

  29. Mike says:

I’m still enjoying the app. And I wanted to put in my vote for more than one time signature. Even adding just 2/4 and 3/4 would create endless possibilities. Thanks again,

    Mike

    • Thomas says:

Mike, you can get 2/4 time by thinking differently about the note lengths and BPM. At a pinch, you can even get 3/4 if you think very differently about the triplets. Yes, it would be horribly disruptive to the creative process, but technically it’s possible!
I’ve added your vote for other time signatures.

      • Mike says:

Thanks Thomas. However, without the other time signatures, you can’t create music in odd meters (for example, 2/4 + 3/4 to achieve a piece in 5/4). In any case, this is probably not an issue for the majority of the app users.

  30. Ben Zonneveld says:

Is there an option to “copy” a library sound to a user “floppy” in order to have a version which uses e.g. different loop point or other changed voice parameters?
My impression at this moment is when I edit a library sound the settings are changed for every instance using that sound.

    • Thomas says:

Ben, sorry, unlike your own sampled or imported voices, there is no way to copy a Fairlight voice. Most of the adjustments to a voice are made in the instrument, and you can have as many of those as you like, but like the original CMI, the loop settings are defined in the voice file itself.

      • Ben Zonneveld says:

So any alterations I make in the loop settings mean the original settings are lost forever and can not be restored?!

        • Thomas says:

There are only two numbers in a loop: the start segment and end segment. If you want to find the original values, you can ask someone else, or you can use iTunes to temporarily remove your cmiPhone.sqlite database (keep a copy!) then run the App, which will now show factory settings. Take note of them, then restore your database.

  32. dave says:

    Hello there,

I am brand new to both iPad and Fairlight Pro – it was one of the very first apps I downloaded, and although I found it a little difficult to fathom, I found that the help is very good, and I, in a reasonable amount of time, figured out how to create and use instruments, and how the step recorder and play back works. I also understand how to export MIDI, but this is where I get lost.
How do I get the exported MIDI to use the voices of the Fairlight – when the MIDI is now on my laptop for instance? When I played it back on the laptop from a generic app, of course, it reverts to piano – I guess I don’t understand how you are supposed to capture an audio performance, featuring the fairlight voices – if you can only export a MIDI file (and no audio).
I am sure this is something I am not understanding – can someone tell me what I am missing here?

    Thanks very, very much! dave

    • Thomas says:

Dave, welcome to the wonderful world of MIDI. There is no simple way to play Fairlight voices on other equipment. When you think about the copyright implications, you might agree that this is a good thing.
At the moment, the only way to get audio out of the Fairlight App is as analogue via the audio-out (headphone socket or dock connector). You could record your whole song onto the laptop, or record each channel separately. You could use Garage Band or some audio workstation software to mix and match bits of the song.
Good on you for learning how to drive a hybrid of 80s green-screen and iOS touch interface!

  33. Mike says:

For the next update, try not to forget about us poor souls who compose in time signatures other than 4/4. Thanks,

    Mike

  34. Curtis says:

Hi there I love this app I have had it a while on the Ipad and the Iphone.
I know the virtual keyboard is available on the Iphone on the sampler page but on the sequencer page on the Ipad I can input the notes with the virtual keyboard, but so far I have been unable to find the virtual keyboard on the sequencer page on the Iphone. Am I missing something or is it only available on the Ipad?

  35. Hi – Just got myself the Fairlight Pro app, Ipad 2 and the Alesis I0 Dock running Firmware 1.7. Looking forward to using this in our album due to be released eary 2012. Love it!

  36. Arthur Crichton says:

Since installing IOS 5 on my iPad 2 I cannot preview samples in the P2 Disk samples list. Is this a known bug on IOS 5?

  37. kaiman says:

Hello Doc. Thank’s for good news about windows version (alesis firmware upgrade). Now my IO Dock is upgraded. I can report that some midi app, now work well and others apps (not only fairlight pro) still have midi note problem (note locked on).
All the apps tested, works well with camera kit adaptor, and the apps tested by me are the same before IO upgrade. I Think is not fairlight app problem (and others apps tested), but could be IO dock problem partially solved by actual firmware. I suggest apps developers, and apps users to contact (i will do it) Alesis, to report this, hoping in new firmware upgrade, that resolve completely this. I Also suggest to use camera kit adaptor waiting new alesis firmware. Is not a solution, but a only temporary way to work well with some apps not well supported by IO dock (sorry for my bad english).

    • Thomas says:

Thanks, Kaiman, you have described it exactly. Fairlight finally got an Alesis IO Dock delivered, and I can confirm that it is an Alesis problem. To prove this, run the free MIDI Monitor App and play a keyboard through the IODock, with multiple simultaneous keys. You will notice that both note-on and note-off events are lost, resulting in missing notes and stuck notes.
Only an Alesis firmware update can fix this.

  38. John says:

Just saw that there seems to have been an update (on the iTunes app page, it says Aug. 22 was the date).

    1) Did this update fix the release time bug/problem? This refers to how the release time gets longer the lower the pitch of the sample – something that didn’t happen on the IIx.

    2) How do I update my existing app?

Thanks for such a nostalgic product – takes me back to when I used it many years ago 🙂

    • Thomas says:

John, this problem was discovered too late to go into the 1.1/1.1.5 release. You can see all the bug fixes and new features in the “What’s new in version 1.1.5” part of the App description in the App Store.
You can upgrade to the latest version of any App by going to the App Store App on your device, or the Apps section of iTunes on your computer, and selecting Updates.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the Fairlight App. I’m sure you’ll enjoy 1.1.5 even more, now it has sampling.

      • John says:

Glad you fixed the keyboard scaling of release times, but the maximum release time is still much shorter than the IIx. Any chance of extending or at least matching that?

        • Thomas says:

John, the limited number of choices were partly to simplify the user interface to suit the iPhone, but also a way to shoehorn this information into the original .IN instrument file format, which doesn’t have much free space.
However, the maximum release time should equal the full length of the sample when played at C4, so you should only be limited on low notes.

  39. kaiman says:

@Roland : Alesis IO Dock firmware, can be upgraded. Did you try if fw upgrade resolve your problem?. I tested Fairlight pro with normal core midi adaptor (connection camera kit), without problem. So i think that some midi bug could be relative at Io Dock, but probabily resolved from Alesis with new firmware release. Tomorrow (10 sept.) I.will receive Io Dock, so i can report if it work well. (kaiman)

  40. Depreys says:

I am thinking of getting an Alesis IO Dock – it is core midi, so it should work correct?

    • Thomas says:

In a word: yes. However, as sampling is mono, only the first input is used.

    • Roland says:

Bought an Alesis iO Dock yesterday and it does NOT work properly with the Fairlight Pro App. Many times the App does not receive the key release information, this results in “hanging” notes, until you hit the hanging key again.

It works properly with the iMS20 app, so this seems to be an issue of the Fairlight app. I tried another Alesis dock in the shop, same negative result with the Fairlight app. Developers, please take care of this problem !!!

      • Thomas says:

Roland, we are still awaiting delivery of an IO Dock for testing. As soon as it arrives we will investigate and deal with this problem.

      • Mike says:

I had a similar issue when using the Fairlight app with one of the little Akai keyboards. Hanging notes occurred whenever polyphony exceeded 4 notes. I returned the keyboard controller so I don’t know if thar issue was ever rectified.

        • Thomas says:

Versions earlier than 1.1 had a problem with certain keyboards that didn’t send note-off events, such as some Akai keyboards. A workaround for that was included in 1.1. The Alesis I/O Dock problem must be a different thing.

          • kaiman says:

I can confirm that is not fairlight problem. MY IO dock have the same problem with all midi apps. I can not upgrade the firmware, because it’s only released for mac user, and i only have windows OS, but this is not a fairlight problem. I will report future test with alesis firmware upgrade, if it will be possible for windows users.

          • Thomas says:

Could all those of you who are having problems with the Alesis IO Dock please report which MIDI keyboard you are using? This problem may be specific to a keyboard model, rather than the Alesis.

          • kaiman says:

I have tested IO, with different keyboard (virus TI 2, Clavinova, and others) using midi connections, or USB midi, but the problem was present in all test, for all ipad midi apps. (no problem with camera connection kit). I know that in other forum, someone report that new firmware alesis resolve completely this bug. It’s important to know that new firmware is available only for MAC users, but Alesis is also working to release a windows version. In any case is not a Fairlight app problem, and it’s a little e resolvible problem. Kaiman.

          • Thomas says:

Kaiman, thanks for the detailed information. I’m sure other Alesis customers will find it useful.

          • kaiman says:

Thank you Thomas. I’m sure that Alesis product is useful, and i know reading a lot of post in various forum, that IO dock midi bug is resolved by new firmware. I wrote in this forum to confirm that this bug was not imputable to Fairlight app. I’m sure to resolve in few days the firmware update, by a friend that have mac computer. Thank to all Fairlight staff, to create this fantastic app for Ipad. (kaiman).

          • Doc T. says:

Hello Kaiman, I got a call from nick at Numark (Alesis) yesterday 9/23/11 with good new. There is now a Firmware update for windows. All of my synths work ok now except for my Fairlight Pro App. Still get hanging notes in fairlight . Good Luck

          • Thomas says:

Doc T, what MIDI keyboard are you using?
We are still waiting for the Alesis IO Dock to turn up so we can investigate. Must have been sent by sea…

          • Doc T. says:

Hello Thomas, the keyboard I use as a midi controller is Yamaha MM6. Right now I do not have anything hooked up to the ipad2. I have takin it out of the alesis io Dock, and the Fairlight app will not load. It crashes every time I try to open it. It not my Mm6 it works with all other apps. Please let me know when you get the io Dock. BTW, CAN YOU MAKE A free WINDOWS 7 version of fair light app for Pro version owners like nano studio did. Thank you, DOC T.

          • Thomas says:

Doc, it sounds like the Apps running in the background don’t leave enough memory for the Fairlight App to load. If you don’t know how to quit background Apps, see the FAQ “My App quits on startup” above.

    • Thomas says:

Like Apple, we don’t comment on future plans. 8^)
But seriously, waveform drawing is high on the list of features we’d like to add.
Since Page R uses almost all of the CPU, your device wouldn’t be much use to you if it was playing in the background. We need non-realtime rendering to achieve this as well as audio file export. That will take a while.

  45. Cam says:

    Hello again Thomas,

In page r, could I write an entire sequence of patterns (patterns may be of varying bar amounts), save the complete sequence (which may include repeated patterns), and send MIDI play/stop/song position pointer messages via MIDI out of line 6 interface?

My objective is to sync my elektron machinedrum’s outstanding sequencer to the app’s master MIDI clock. I would slave the app to my elektron, but I don’t know if the line 6 has MIDI thru. This is of prime importance to me since the app would be introduced to a mobile setup involving a somewhat complex MIDI chain.

    Thanks!

    • Thomas says:

We’re still trying to reproduce this one, but have not yet found a way to make it happen. Also we need to know the device you are using. Please use the support page form.

      • Mike says:

If I open up pg. 3, select “edit” and proceed to edit a sound using the virtual attack or release dials, no change occurs in the attack/release of the sound.

If I then go to pg. R and try to play the string (for example) sound I have just edited (in pg. 3), a number of strange things happen: the original sound is replaced by another one, or the sound I’ve just edited in pg. 3 sustains indefinitely. Strange!

  47. Mike says:

I’m sorry to say that the new update is quite a let down. Every time I try to adjust the attack of a sound, the sound first sustains indefinitely and then is replaced by another sound. It seems, in fact, that trying to adjust any parameters in pg. 3 leads to unexpected results.

  48. Gerry says:

I updated the pro version today. now it launches with a keyboard and immediately quits.

This can happen if there is not enough spare memory. Try quitting other Apps, especially memory-hungry games. Double-tap home, then hold down one of the apps in the bottom row. Then tap (-) on the apps you don’t need to have running. If that doesn’t work, please send the crash logs. See the FAQ for how to get your crash logs.
